Are you fucking kidding me? Here's an idea. If it really is "affluenza" then you sentence the parents. They never heald him responsible for anything so I mean really it's their fault. Let's see them pay for that big fancy defense then! It would be good tv watching them pass the buck back and forth between parents and child for who got to go to jail for this ass-hattery.

Apparently there is more to the story. The judge let him go but charged his family like a 100k per year for the next 10 years or something like that. The son also has to pay fines once he grows up and let's not forget the suing that will ensue. In short he is gonna get fukd. Plus if the judge did send him to jail, I think he would have got a max of 6 years. I would do more research though. The source I got it from was janky.

Yeah when I first heard of this I actually almost spit my drink all over my laptop. It's disgusting. I literally didn't believe this when I first read it. I double checked to see if I was on the onion, but I wasn't. This is horrible, since when is being "too rich" an excuse for doing ANYTHING? He needs to be cut off and face a dose of reality. The parents are mostly at fault, not letting their own kid see what real life is like. This is why kids who live off of trust funds get little respect.

1000 hours of community service + torn up license for 10 years + alcohol treatment program. If you;re 16 and already drunk driving, you don't deserve the right to drive. If you;re also really well off......why not hire a driver? I honestly don't care that much that he had a few drinks at 16. But while I wish I could do this, why he didn't just call up a family driver or a limo or something is beyond me. If you're loaded, you can spring the 150-200 to get a ride home safely from wherever you are.

I have a friend that is rich out of his mind and he has gotten out of some serious shit for being rich, and his parents knowing people. We're 18 and he has gotten pulled over at 150 in his beamer, received only a written warning. 3 DUI's, 2 were he was sleeping in his car after parties in the drivers seat with the car on to stay warm which i guess don't really count but he still got out of them. The other he got pulled over failed the tests, was arrested and then was found innocent after his super expensive lawyer got him out of it. He says his record is 100% clean with no mention of any of this stuff. He also has gotten a bunch of minor stuff that also never really happened according to his record like rolling through stop signs and talking on the phone. But still, God i'd love to get away with shit like that.
Edit: not that i would want to do that stuff in the first place and get away with it but yeah you get it.

It is probably wrong to hope that this situation is rectified by acts of vigilantism but that's all I think hope for now that the justice system has failed.

PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTTTTT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...COTW right here.
Sadly, he'll get busted another couple of times before finally the law is forced to actually deal with him instead of just slapping someone on the wrist.

It's just the complete absence of the parents that is to blame for this. My girlfriend went to school with this kid, I personally have seen him a few times, and he has absolutely no responsibility. He was driving himself to school when he was only 13, and his parents just didn't care. I bet they don't even care about this sentencing in regards to him, only about how it will affect their clients' view of them. They're trying to fix this the only way they know how, by throwing money at it until the situation resolves it. They're paying something like $400k a year for his counseling and rehab and what not. So yeah, the parents could have done a lot to prevent this, but anyone can get drunk and kill people despite all the hypothetical countermeasures. So I blame the dad, the mom, and the kid for being assholes.

that's crazy. I'm from a relatively affluent family and I agree I just wouldn't even want to push it even if I could get away with it. it's called respect lol

You don't have to be rich to get out of DUI. Where I'm from, about 5K for the right lawyer gets charges dropped. This is a regular occurrence, and not just a "privilege" reserved for the wealthy.
And before I get flamed, no I'm not advocating the morality of this, just simply pointing it out.

No joke, ask at a bar how many people have had a DUI. It's still considered no big deal even if you're not super rich. I feel like I'm the only person without one but then again I only walk or get a ride to bars if I drink.

It's not about the license or the alcohol. It's about his remorseless disregard for human life. I say we fry him and make his parents start over if they want a son.

The death sentence would be a bit much but nothing is worse than waiting years to your enivitable death. I say life in prison. This should have never happened, if he wasn't a big ol' douche.

The death penalty is too much because it doesn't hurt anymore and it's too fast nowadays.

While I think he is a scumbag, he's also 16 and a dumbass. If he just took out a gun and shot people? That is "disregard for human life". He did not run these people over on purpose, but he did put himself in that position where he took their lives on accident.

Every one of the reports has mentioned his attitude post accident and how he is completely without remorse for his actions.

Again, he's 16. 16 year olds are all dumbasses. In my mind, they shouldn't be allowed to drive in the first place. Of course he's going to remain "without remorse". Guess what? That's what it means to be a 16 year old American male. You just don't give a flying fuck about a lot of things. This does not excuse his actions, but you can't KILL someone for being a dumbass. That was why I suggested 1000 hours of community service. FORCE him to actually look at where he lives and interact with it in a semi-meaningful way for once in his privileged life and take stock as to what it means to get out of the ivory tower.
Besides, let's say the death penalty was a potential punishment for this scenario, do you think he'd get it? He'd still get away with it to some degree. Meanwhile people who made a mistake could get killed for never hurting someone. Again, not justifying DUIs but keep a few things in perspective here.
